wife, Drusilla, who was Jewish. Sending for
Paul, they listened as he told them about faith
in Christ J esus. 25 As he reasoned with them
about righteousness and s elf-control and the
coming day of judgment, Felix became fright
ened. “Go away for now,” he replied. “When it
is more convenient, I’ll call for you again.” 26 He
also hoped that Paul would bribe him, so he
sent for him quite often and talked with him.
27 After two years went by in this way, Felix
was succeeded by Porcius Festus. And because
Felix wanted to gain favor with the Jewish
people, he left Paul in prison.

Answer me when I call to you,
O God who declares me innocent.
Free me from my troubles.
Have mercy on me and hear my prayer.
How long will you people ruin my
reputation?
How long will you make groundless
accusations?
How long will you continue
your lies?
Interlude
You can be sure of this:
The Lord set apart the godly for himself.
The Lord will answer when I call
to him.
Don’t sin by letting anger control you.
Think about it overnight and
remain silent.
Interlude
Offer sacrifices in the right spirit,
and trust the Lord.
Many people say, “Who will show us better
times?”
Let your face smile on us, Lord.
You have given me greater joy
than those who have abundant harvests
of grain and new wine.
In peace I will lie down and sleep,
for you alone, O Lord, will keep me
safe.

Giving a gift can open doors;
it gives access to important people!
The first to speak in court sounds r ight—
until the cross-examination begins.
Flipping a coin* can end arguments;
it settles disputes between powerful
opponents.
18:18 Hebrew Casting lots.
LORD, BECAUSE OF YOUR UNFAILING LOVE, your
people can boldly enter your presence to lay out their
concerns and worship you. They speak, and you listen!
When life is hard, my instinct is to worry and search
elsewhere for solutions. Help me to see that it’s when
I leave my troubles with you that I can walk away
rejoicing. I turn to you in the morning, at noon, at night.
You are always there! Thank you. Amen.
1 CHRONICLES 4:5–5:17
Ashhur (the father of Tekoa) had two wives,
named Helah and Naarah. 6 Naarah gave
birth to Ahuzzam, Hepher, Temeni, and

ancestor of Anub, Zobebah, and all the
families of Aharhel son of Harum.
9 There was a man named Jabez who was
more honorable than any of his brothers.
His mother named him Jabez* because his
birth had been so painful. 10 He was the
one who prayed to the God of Israel, “Oh,

and keep me from all trouble and pain!”
And God granted him his request.
