Announcement and Arrival of the King (Matthew 1:1–4:25)
Standing in Joseph’s Sandals
Now the birth of Jesus aChrist was
as follows: when His mother Mary
had been bbetrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was
found to be with child by the Holy
Spirit. 19 And Joseph her husband,
being a righteous man and not
wanting to disgrace her, planned ato
send her away secretly. 20 But when
he had considered this, behold, an
angel of the Lord appeared to him
in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of
David, do not be afraid to take Mary
as your wife; for athe Child who has
been bconceived in her is of the Holy
Spirit. 21 She will bear a Son; and
you shall call His name Jesus, for
a
He will save His people from their
sins.” 22 Now all this atook place to
fulfill what was spoken by the Lord
through the prophet: 23 “Behold,
the virgin shall be with child
and shall bear a Son, and they
shall call His name aImmanuel,”
which translated means, “God with
us.” 24 And Joseph aawoke from his
sleep and did as the angel of the Lord
commanded him, and took Mary as
his wife, 25abut kept her a virgin until
she gave birth to a Son; and he called
His name Jesus.

This is how J esus the Messiah was
born. His mother, Mary, was engaged
to be married to Joseph. But before
the marriage took place, while she
was still a virgin, she became pregnant through the power of the Holy
Spirit. 19 Joseph, to whom she was
engaged, was a righteous man and
did not want to disgrace her publicly,
so he decided to break the engagement* quietly.
20 As he considered this, an angel
of the Lord appeared to him in a
dream. “Joseph, son of David,” the
angel said, “do not be afraid to take
Mary as your wife. For the child
within her was conceived by the Holy
Spirit. 21 And she will have a son, and
you are to name him Jesus,* for he
will save his people from their sins.”
22 All of this occurred to fulfill the
Lord’s message through his prophet:

“Look! The virgin will conceive a
child!
She will give birth to a son,
and they will call him
Immanuel,*
which means ‘God is with us.’”
When Joseph woke up, he did
as the angel of the Lord commanded
and took Mary as his wife. 25 But he
did not have sexual relations with
her until her son was born. And Jo
seph named him Jesus.

The Bible records several conceptions and births that we could describe
as amazing, unexpected, or even miraculous. The long-drawn-out
promise of Abraham’s “seed” was finally fulfilled when Isaac was born
to a n
inety-year-old mother, Sarah (Gen. 21:2). The wife of Elkanah,
Hannah, previously unable to have children, was finally blessed with a
