Our mission is to empower all of our students to be successful
and responsible in a nurturing and diverse learning community,
so that they can achieve their potential in a changing world. In
harmony with the ideals of the IB Learner Profile, and the spirit of
the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, we aim for students to
be inquiring, inspired, and involved lifelong learners.
Vienna International School opened in 1978 to serve the United
Nations and diplomatic communities in Vienna. It has the support
and official recognition of the Austrian Government and the
City of Vienna and is accredited by the Austrian Ministry of
Education and the Council of International Schools. The school is
governed by a Board of Representatives from the United Nations,
international agencies, embassies and the parent community.
The diverse student body represents more than 100 nationalities.
The total school enrolment is 1344 with 825 students aged 11 to
19 at the secondary level. Classroom instruction stresses both
individual learning and also cooperative endeavours. The
language of instruction is English. More than 95% of students
successfully complete the demanding courses of the International
Baccalaureate Diploma Programme, and choose to go on to
