Romans ~ Don’t Go Back!
Rom. 6:15-23
In this section of Romans, Paul continues to make it clear that the fact we are
saved by grace and are “not under law” does not justify continuing in sin.
He grants the obvious, that we are free moral agents (vss. 16,17), but with choices
come consequences. Christians who are active in their faith in Christ say, “thanks
be to God,” that because of Christ’s death, we were able to be freed from sin
and become servants of righteousness. This exit from sin occurred coincident
with our “obedience” from the heart to the gospel.
Having been set free from sin, we are now able to rejoice in lives where God’s
righteousness is our Master.
We used to be slaves to impurity and lawlessness. But, having obeyed the gospel,
we are now able to be personally engaged in righteousness “leading to
sanctification.”
In that previous life of serving sin, there was nothing valuable being produced.
Here is how Paul says that. “What fruit were you getting at that time from the
things of which you are now ashamed? For the end of those things is death.”
“But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves of God,
the fruit you get leads to sanctification and its end, eternal life. For the wages of
sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
If you are a Christian, be thankful. Likewise, determine you will never seek any
way back into sin. Be a servant of God for life.
