“It’s great to see another one of our state’s existing businesses
build on its presence here. We celebrate Grey Ghost Bakery’s
decision to invest and create 25 new jobs in Charleston County.”
— South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster
I
f you’ve grown up along the
South Carolina coast than
you have undoubtedly heard
the legend of the Grey Ghost
in some form or fashion.
Originated on Pawleys
Island, the legend has said that
the Grey Ghost, a friendly spirit,
appears to alert residents of
impending storms and protects
those who heed his warning.
Inspired by her lazy summer
days spent baking and sharing
Lowcountry lore with friends
and family at their Pawleys
Island beach house, Grey
Ghost Bakery owner Katherine
Frankstone
named
her
company after the cherished
legend.
Like the ghost tales of the
Carolina Lowcountry, Grey
Ghost Bakery’s legendary
recipes have been passed
through Frankstone’s family
for generations. Founded in
2011 in Columbia, Grey Ghost
Bakery, which now calls West
Ashley home, uses premium
ingredients to create madefrom-scratch, hand-formed
cookies in flavors such as
lemon sugar, molasses spice,
chocolate espresso, chocolate
bourbon and more.
“When we relocated Grey
Ghost Bakery to Charleston
in 2014, we were leaving
a
commissary
kitchen
arrangement and wanted to
build out our own bakery,”
says Frankstone. “We moved
largely for lifestyle reasons but
quickly discovered the amazing
entrepreneurial community
here. The support from fellow
entrepreneurs and the local
government support for small
business has been incredible.”
After relocating from
Columbia, Grey Ghost initially
set up shop on James Island
before moving to the renovated
former Charleston Hardware
space at 1028 Wappoo Road
in 2019. Grey Ghost Bakery
is currently undergoing a
$395,000 expantion to increase
and wish them continued
success in the future, said
South Carolina Gov. Henry
McMaster.
