Spade Ranches were started in 1889 when Colonel Isaac Ellwood bought

Today, Spade operates on 250,000 acres in six locations in West Texas
and the Panhandle. Wesley Welch is CEO and the owners are six of the
Ellwood’s descendants. The cattle breeding program uses composite
bulls (Sim/Angus and Balancers) to produce calves with growth,
marbling and outstanding feedlot performance, and replacement heifers
with hybrid vigor and desirable maternal traits. The horse program
features a son of PEPTOBOONSMAL, and a son of HIGHBROW CAT that
are used to produce cowy, durable using horses when crossed on the
DOC BAR and LITTLE PEPPY broodmare band.
