REMAINING EVER
VIGILANT
When our kids were
small and in Sunday
school, we were
dismayed that there
was no education about the
Holocaust. When we asked why,
we were told it was simply ‘too
difficult’ to cope with. We were
never satisfied with that approach.
We fervently believe that everyone
should have Holocaust education
at some point in their life.
We made a financial commitment
before the Museum was built,
and we hosted one of the first
fundraisers in Chicago. The
concept of such a museum was
still brand new, but we could
immediately envision the impact of
such an institution in Washington,
DC, and its role in creating a
formative educational experience
for American schoolchildren.
Once it was built, we chose to
make our first visit to the Museum
as a family. We never could have
predicted everything that has been
accomplished inside the building
136 l UNITED STATES HOLOCAUST MEMORIAL MUSEUM LEGACY OF LIGHT GUARDIANS
or the extensive outreach and
educational efforts worldwide.
We could not have imagined the
continual contributions to Holocaust
education made by the Museum’s
globally respected scholars. But
antisemitism is a cancer that keeps
spreading … it will not go away; it just
wears different masks.
Now, when we go to the Museum,
it is with our grandchildren at our
side. By showing our family how
much this means to us, we hope
they will share our commitment and
carry it forward. Future generations
must understand that we all must be
ever vigilant. It would be nice if the
statement ‘Never Again’ was true, but
sadly, it is not. That is why our legacy
gift will help the Museum continue
to teach and evolve. Holocaust
education is broader than learning
history; it’s about learning how to be
moral human beings.”
