Ella Anselm, née Gewurtz—
my mother—survived the
Holocaust in Bratislava,
Czechoslovakia, by hiding in plain
sight. When ordered by the Nazis to
report to the train that would take her
family to Auschwitz, she refused.
Hunted constantly, she avoided
capture through the extraordinary
help and kindness of strangers,
eventually managing to smuggle
money for the Jewish Agency and
guns for the resistance. We must
never forget, she told me, the
courageous individual acts of altruism
and heroism that made it possible to
tell the story today. The US Holocaust
Memorial Museum carries Ella’s
message into the future.”
