met our neighbor. She
was dressed in black, and
I noticed the dark rings
under her eyes. Greeting
each other, we walked
to the trash chute. Rose
reached for the door. For
the first time in my life,
I saw the numbers. My
eyes tearing, Rose held
my hand, saying, ‘It’s ok.’
Looking into my eyes, she
spoke, ‘You may never see
me again. I sleep during
the day, for I cannot sleep
at night.’ That morning
profoundly affected us. Stan
and I promised one day we

refused to emigrate. The
day before my family was
to board their ship to the
United States, SS agents
came to take them away.
My grandfather showed
the boat tickets for the
next day, and they received
a reprieve. I hope I never
know the fear that my
family experienced. My
grandmother suffered
from survivors’ guilt. Her
beloved parents were killed
in Theresienstadt. I am
honored to make this gift,
so that our story will be
retold and never forgotten.”
