Texas became just the
fourth unranked team to
defeat a ranked opponent in
Valero Alamo Bowl history
when they took down the
Utah Utes 38-10.
Quarterback Sam
Ehlinger accounted for 280
all-purpose yards and four
touchdowns, and running
back Keaontay Ingram
racked up 108 yards on the
ground with two touchdowns of his own to lead the
Longhorn offense, but the real story of the day was
the Texas defense.
Led by Defensive MVP Joseph Ossai, the
Longhorns held Utah scoreless in the first half and just
254 yards on the day. Ossai himself was an absolute
force, accumulating three sacks and six tackles for
loss on the day.
After being kept out of the end zone through three
quarters, Utah quarterback Tyler Huntley found the
end zone in the fourth quarter on a 4 yard pass to
Demari Simpkins, but it proved to be too little too late
for the Utes. Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Year Zack
Moss was kept bottled up by the Texas front, only
managing to run for 57 yards on the day.
In yet another Valero
Alamo Bowl that came
down to the final minutes,
the #13 Washington State
Cougars successfully
held off #24 Iowa State
Cyclones to secure a twopoint victory. Washington
State, led by Gardner
Minshew II, took control
of the first half with a 21-10
lead. A strong Washington
State defense held Iowa State scoreless until the
25th minute of the half when Iowa State’s true
freshman quarterback, Brock Purdy, responded
with a 9-yard TD run.
Iowa State returned for the second half firing on
all cylinders, outscoring Washington State 10-0 in
the third quarter. David Montgomery’s 8-yard run
and Assalley’s 23-yard field goal closed the gap to
one point.
After a fourth quarter Iowa State fumble, a 10-yard
touchdown run from Max Borghi would prove to be
the game winning score. In the final minutes of the
game Iowa State scored on a 74-yard drive bringing
the score within two. After a failed two-point
conversion, the Cougars ran out the final minutes of
the clock to become the 2018 Valero Alamo Bowl
Champions.
TEXAS 38 UTAH 10
#15 TCU held on in the
final minutes of a tight
contest to win 39-37
against #13 Stanford.
Stanford controlled
the ball in the first half,
including a 15-yard run
from running back and
Heisman finalist Bryce Love
in the first quarter and two
touchdown passes from
quarterback KJ Costello to
wide receiver J.J. Arcega-Whiteside to take a 21-3
lead at the half.
TCU stormed back in the second half behind big
plays from quarterback Kenny Hill, who won Valero
Alamo Bowl Offensive MVP honors, and a 76-yard
punt return from receiver Desmon White, which
broke a Valero Alamo Bowl record.
TCU receiver Jalen Reagor racked up 169
receiving yards, and recorded his own Valero Alamo
Bowl record 93-yard touchdown catch in the fourth
quarter.
TCU’s Cole Bunce’s 33-yard field goal with just
over three minutes left put the Horned Frogs up 3937 and an interception by safety Innis Gaines with
two minutes left secured a TCU victory.
