2007 VALERO ALAMO BOWL
A Penn State victory
seemed unlikely when
Texas A&M took an early
14-0 lead in the 1st quarter
of the 2007 Valero Alamo
Bowl. But the Nittany
Lions, led by Joe Paterno,
stormed back to take a 1714 just before halftime.
In the second half, Penn
State’s defense held tough
as it held Texas A&M to just
three points en route to a 24-17 win.
Penn State’s Rodney Kinlaw won Offensive MVP
honors after running for 143 yards on 21 carries and
backup running back Evan Royster finished with
65 on nine carries. The win marked Paterno’s 23rd
bowl win, extending his NCAA-record over Bobby
Bowden.
The Iowa Hawkeyes
10-point first quarter wasn’t
enough to hold off the No.
18 Texas Longhorns in the
2006 Alamo Bowl.
Iowa squandered a
4-point halftime lead,
marking the first time in
Bowl history that the team
leading at halftime didn’t
end up winning.
Current NFL
quarterback Colt McCoy, led the Longhorns to a
victory as the freshman threw two touchdowns
and 308 yards on his way to Offensive MVP honors.
Jamaal Charles accounted for 98 yards from
scrimmage and a touchdown, a precursor to his
1800+ yard season the following year.
Hawkeye receiver Andy Brodell did his best
to keep Iowa in the ballgame by hauling down six
receptions for 159 yards. Brodell’s two touchdowns
tied a Alamo Bowl record that wasn’t topped until
2017.
The 2005 MasterCard
Alamo Bowl was one for the
ages. The No. 20 Michigan
Wolverines nearly pulled off
the improbable on the final
play of the game.
Down by four with
two seconds remaining,
Michigan quarterback
Chad Henne completed a
short pass that started a
chain of eight laterals and a
near miracle. Coaches and players from both teams
made their way onto the field mid-play thinking the
game had ended as Michigan’s Tyler Ecker caught
the eighth lateral and scampered up the sideline
toward the end zone. But Nebraska cornerback
Titus Brothers chased Ecker down and knocked
him out of bounds to secure a wild and wacky 32-28
victory for the Huskers.
