With its second-string
quarterback Justin Zwick
running the show, the Ohio
State Buckeyes made
winning look easy in the
2004 MasterCard Alamo
Bowl, securing a 33-7 win
over Oklahoma State.
Zwick, who replaced
suspended Troy Smith,
threw for 189 yards and
a touchdown in the onesided matchup.
True freshman wide receiver Ted Ginn Jr. put on
an offensive show, catching six passes for 78 yards
and rushing for another 40 yards and a touchdown
in the victory.
Mike Nugent, the senior kicker who won the Lou
Groza award that year, had a perfect night nailing
four field goals and three PATs.
Ginn earned Offensive MVP honors while Defensive
MVP honors went to Buckeye defensive end Simon
Fraser.
The 2003 MasterCard
Alamo Bowl turned out to
be a one-sided affair as the
Spartans proved no match
for the Cornhuskers.
Both defenses
allowed no points in the
second half, but a strong
first performance from
Nebraska gave the 9-3
Huskers a 17-3 win.
Husker quarterback
Jammal Lord ran for 79 yards, including a careerlong 66-yard scamper that set up running back
Cory Ross’ second score. But it was Lord’s arm that
surprised his critics as the senior leader threw for a
career-best 160 yards and earned Offensive MVP
honors.
Michigan State senior quarterback Jeff Smoker
was limited to 156 yards passing and his final pass
as a Spartan was intercepted by Fabian Washington
with 1:08 remaining.
The Blackshirt defense of Nebraska did not
disappoint the Husker faithful. Nebraska recorded
three interceptions and five sacks, limiting the
Spartans to 18 rushing yards and 174 total, more than
200 below its average.

The kicking game
proved the difference in
a back and forth game
that needed overtime to
separate these teams.
Wisconsin kicker Mike
Allen booted a 37-yard field
goal in overtime to seal the
31-28 win after Colorado
kicker Pat Brougham
missed a 45-yard attempt
in the Buffaloes’ overtime
possession.
The victory for Wisconsin capped off a fourthquarter comeback that saw the Badgers drive 80
yards, convert two fourth downs and find the end
zone on a one-yard-run by quarterback Brooks
Bollinger, the Offensive MVP, with 51 seconds
remaining.
