Texas Tech quarterback
Kliff Kingsbury was picked
off in the end zone by Bob
Sanders on the last play of
the game to secure a 19-16
Hawkeye victory.
A defensive struggle
throughout, both teams
relied on special teams.
Iowa kicker Nate Kaeding
nailed four field goals and
TTU kicker Robert Treece
connected on two 4th quarter field goals, including a
game-tying 37-yarder with 2:05 remaining.
But the Hawkeye offense had one last drive in
them as Offensive MVP tailback Aaron Greving
helped march Iowa down the field where Kaeding
kicked a game-winning field goal with 44 seconds
left on the clock.
The game featured big plays from future coach
Kliff Kingsbury, NFL Pro Bowler Wes Welker and
2007 Defensive Player of the Year Bob Sanders.
The 2000 SYLVANIA
Alamo Bowl was a rout that
showcased the nation’s
best rushing attack in the
Nebraska Cornhuskers.
Husker running back Dan
Alexander set a Bowl
record with 240 yards in
Nebraska’s 66-17 victory.
The Huskers led 7-3
after the 1st quarter, but a
Bowl record 31-point 2nd
quarter blew the game wide open. The Huskers
tacked on 21 more on the Wildcat defense in the 3rd
and the rout was on.
Alexander rushed for 240 yards -- the most by
any Husker in a bowl game -- and two scores on 21
carries as the nation’s best ground game shredded
Northwestern’s overmatched defense. Crouch, who
would win the Heisman the following season, added
four scores including two on the ground.
IOWA 19 TTU 16
No. 13 Penn State used
the spark from its strong
defensive squad to defeat
No. 18 Texas A&M 24-0
in the 1999 SYLVANIA
Alamo Bowl.
The Nittany Lion
defense attacked early and
often as A&M quarterback
Randy McCown had his
first two pass attempts
intercepted, including a 34yard return for the first score of the game by Penn
State’s Derek Fox.
All-American linebacker and Defensive MVP
LaVar Arrington led the defensive charge for Penn
State with an Alamo Bowl record 14 tackles. The
defense led by future NFL veterans Arrington,
defensive end Courtney Brown and linebacker
Brandon Short pressured McCown into throwing
four interceptions. Brown and Arrington were
selected with the No. 1 and No. 2 spots in the 2000
NFL Draft respectively.
