The 30th annual Valero Alamo Bowl features the highest ranked matchup outside the CFP bowls with #12
Washington and #20 Texas. Seven of the last nine years the Valero Alamo Bowl has featured a Top 20 matchup.
This will be the 5th meeting between the two teams, and only their second meeting in 42 years. The Longhorns
won both games of a home-and-home series in 1974 and 1975, 35-21 and 28-10, respectively.
There other two meetings were the 1979 Sun Bowl, where Washington won 14-7 and the 2001 Holiday Bowl,
which Texas claimed a wild, come-from-behind 47-43 victory. Longhorn quarterback Major Applewhite threw
for a career-best 473 yards and 4 touchdowns.
Three of the top five most-viewed Valero Alamo Bowls in history include either Texas or Washington:
7,829,470 – Valero Alamo Bowl, January 2, 2010 (Michigan State vs. Texas Tech)
7,791,097 – Alamo Bowl, December 30, 2006 (Texas vs. Iowa)
7,547,399 – Valero Alamo Bowl, December 30, 2013 (Oregon vs. Texas)

6,923,194 – Valero Alamo Bowl, December 29, 2011 (Washington vs. Baylor)
The 2011 Valero Alamo Bowl was the Huskies only appearance to San Antonio. Head Coach Steve Sarkisian and
the Huskies lost a historic 67-56 offensive shootout against Baylor and Heisman winner Robert Griffin III.
Griffin is the only active Heisman winners to play in the Valero Alamo Bowl, but four alumni have also won the
award: Michigan’s Charles Woodson (1995 Alamo Bowl, 1997 Heisman winner), Nebraksa’s Eric Crouch (2000
Alamo Bowl, 2001 Heisman winner), Oregon’s Marcus Mariota (2013 Alamo Bowl, 2014 Heisman winner),
and Caleb Williams (2021 Alamo Bowl with Oklahoma, 2022 Heisman winner with USC). These winners were
a combined 4-1 in the Valero Alamo Bowl. Woodson left the 1995 game early because of an injury and his
Wolverines lost to Texas A&M 22-20.
Both head coaches are making their first bowl appearance at of their respective programs.
Pac-12 Conference teams are 5-10 in the Valero Alamo Bowl; current members of the Big 12 are 13-10.
