Vienna International School
The Design Department
As we experience a time of significant
challenges as well as opportunities, the
world as we know it, faces an ongoing
economic, social, geopolitical, and digital
volatility, as we transition into the age of
artificial intelligence. As you may already
know, AI is and will continue to essentially transform every industry, which will
also affect education.
With this new wave of change, we seek
for newer approaches to teaching and
learning in our department, as we intend
to provide ongoing development within
our school to meet the needs of the curriculum and of our students within the
different frameworks that we work with.
This will help us and our learners to adapt
to the ongoing innovation and face the
challenges.
We have gradually addressed the need
for transformations to further developed
our programme of study. We are working
on how to promote active participation
in our learning activities facilitated using technology within our department,
which we are also using to support other
departments.
This was clearly evidenced during our
Grade 7 IDU Week, in September. The
students were requested to combine
subject knowledge and concepts to plan,
design and present their learning on the
“Sustainability in Vienna” theme. We
combined site visits, with hands-on activities combined with digital approaches
for our students to develop and present
their responses to the others in a creative
digital manner.
This year, we are also working in collaboration with the Vienna Academy of Fine
Arts, where we provide the aspiring teachers with the opportunity to develop their
knowledge and understanding of Design
education within the Design and Innovation Centre.
Over the years, we had modified our
practice and delivery with the use of
technology, which we are now working
to redefine. As we navigate further into
our daily delivery of lessons, we aim to
transform our approaches to drive our
learners into innovative areas while
also fostering exploration within the
IB realm. We look forward to the use of
technology to enable practices that are
completely new and were impossible
without its involvement.
As we enter the year 2025, we contemplate on the unprecedented opportunity
for transformative pedagogy to enrich
and redefine our practices, which we
share across our school to enhance the
teaching and learning experiences. Our
intentions remain with a focus on developing problem-solving based approaches with collaborative practices to provide
opportunities for our students to inquire,
inspire and involve themselves in their
education and beyond.
