[In November], my son, daughter and myself as well
as my dad came into your McCormick Branch to take
out some books on my father’s library card for our
visit for the weekend (we live in Montreal). One of
your staff approached my daughter and invited her
to write a letter to Santa and explained the process to
her.
Both of my kids filled in the form and put their letters
in the mailbox. There are a few things you need to
know:
1) We have never done the Santa thing in our house.
Ever. So...the fact that my kids were willing to do it
was cute...but surprising.
2) My daughter is very dyslexic but the form was
constructed in a way where she could be successful at
it and enjoyed it (and I am REALLY thankful for that).
After we returned to Montreal my kids did inquire
about when their reply would be coming. I was sort of
surprised, I didn’t think they cared.
[When the replies arrived], they were both BLOWN
away. The both commented on how nice the letters
were, on how the letters were personalized, on how
‘well the letters told the story’ and ‘it feels like I am
there.’ We had a great discussion about narrative,
about adding details, about the magic of storytelling
AND NOW they are excited to go back and visit
Grandma and Grandpa next year and do the same
thing again.
So, to whomever was spearheading the initiative,
thank you. Thank you for spinning a magic tale in a
way that even kids who don’t believe in Santa could
enjoy it...but most of all, thank-you for constructing a
writing project that my daughter could enjoy.
