Here in the Channel Islands, we have believed that a good business should be
an ethical business.
Our customers already know this. In the Autumn 2022 IGR Brand Index
survey of over 150 local businesses, The Coop ranked number one in Jersey
and Guernsey for making a positive contribution to the local community.
For environmental sustainability we are ranked number two in Guernsey
and number three in Jersey.
As a local business, the publication of this document is a major milestone in our
journey. Here we define what we mean by being a sustainable business, and
we explain how it fits with our other strategic commitments and the United
Nations 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDG’s). Our immediate focus is
about creating the baseline measures from which we can chart meaningful
progress, as well as beginning to train all our colleagues in understanding the
ethics that comes with being in a leading a local business.
The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) define global
sustainable development priorities and aspirations, seeking
to mobilise global efforts with common goals and targets.
We have based our sustainability framework and future
reporting on the 17 SDG’s and the Cooperative values and
principles.
The wording of the 7th Cooperative Principle was agreed
in 1995 in the context of the international debate in the
United Nations about setting sustainable development
goals, so utilising the SDGs as the basis for our sustainability
framework makes sense.
This strategy is just the very beginning. As we grow from here, we’ll publish
updates from time to time, to let our members and key stakeholders know exactly
how far we have journeyed and what the crucial next steps might look like.
Our sustainability strategy does not have a destination, it is our journey to a
better future for all.
“Sustainability is not a definitive destination
but a journey we need to take to get to any kind
of future”
