It may only be a small island off the west coast of
Scotland with 3,000 inhabitants, but where Islay may
lack in physical size, it makes up for in its whisky
heritage. Distilleries were first introduced on Islay
to take advantage of the island’s ability to produce
barley in abundance, the softness of its water and the
copious amounts of peat needed during the malting
Founded in 1779, just eleven years after the town
which shares its name, Bowmore is Islay’s oldest
distillery. It is whispered that the distillery’s founder,
David Simpson, had in fact started distilling long
before this after his arrival on Islay in 1766. Home
to the world’s oldest whisky maturation warehouse,
the No.1 Vaults, it is in this legendary building that
Bowmore whisky has sat in splendid isolation for
over 200 years. Single malt expressions released from
this Islay distillery are amongst the most sought after
and collectible around the world.
