GORDON & MACPHAIL
From a humble grocery business in the heart of
Scotland’s Speyside region to the world’s most
recognised malt whisky specialists, the tale of Gordon
& MacPhail traces back to 1895 when founded by
James Gordon and John Alexander MacPhail.
Joined by John Urquhart in 1915, they initially
created their whisky portfolio to complement the
varied stock within their Elgin-based grocery shop.
By 1933, George Urquhart joined the business,
carefully selecting whiskies to be bottled under
their own label. The independent family business
prospered and built up a stock of good quality casks.
George Urquhart is widely-respected and recognised
in the industry as a pioneer and innovator.
