CLASSICAL SERIES: SCHUBERT’S “UNFINISHED”
SOPRANO
Soprano Sydney Anderson is quickly gaining
recognition as a skilled and versatile performer
on both concert and operatic stages. An
accomplished concert soloist, she made her
European concert debut in the summer of 2017
with the Danube Symphony Orchestra, after
winning First Place in their Concerto Competition,
and appeared as a guest recitalist with the 2017
Festival Musicale Itinerante’s Chamber Music
Series in Sardegna. Sydney has been a featured
soloist with the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra,
Bach Society Houston, and Ars Lyrica Houston.
Recent concert appearances include Mozart’s
Requiem, Evangelist in Heinrich Schütz’s
Johannes Passion, and the title role in Handel’s
Esther. In 2019, she returned to Ars Lyrica
Houston to portray La madre in Stradella’s San
Giovanni Battista and was featured as the soprano soloist in Christopher
Theofanidis’s The Here and Now and Brett Keuper Abigaña’s Symphony No. 1:
Omnes Gentes at Woolsey Hall.
In 2016, Sydney celebrated her main stage debut with Houston Grand Opera
as Arminy in Carousel, directed by Rob Ashford and conducted by Richard
Bado, after participating in the company’s Opera to Go! program. She made
role debuts as Zerlina in a staged production of Don Giovanni with the
Kalamazoo Symphony Orchestra, and received high praise for her “stunning
vocal fireworks” and “smartly defined” portrayal of Elettra in Opera NEO’s
2018 production of Idomeneo. Other roles include Manon in Manon, Lisette in
La Rondine, Adina in L’elisir d’amore, Antonia in Les Contes d’Hoffmann, and
Rosalinde in Die Fledermaus.
As a Studio Artist with Opera Saratoga in 2015, Sydney covered the roles of
Belinda in Dido and Aeneas and Virgil in the World Premiere of The Long Walk
by Jeremy Howard Beck, and received third place in the company’s Young
Artist Competition. In 2019, she returned to Opera Saratoga to sing the Dew
Fairy in Hänsel und Gretel in a groundbreaking collaborative production with
Manuel Cinema., for which the Albany Times praised her for her memorable
“sparkle.” While in residence with Opera Saratoga, she also covered Jennifer
Zetlan in the title role of the World Premiere of Ricky Ian Gordon’s Ellen West,
co-commissioned by Beth Morrison Projects. In 2019-2020 Sydney sang the
role of Monkey in the first workshop performance of The Opposable Thumb
by Liliya Ugay with American Lyric Theater. In 2022, she will sing the role of
Countess Almaviva in Le Nozze di Figaro with Opera in the Heights.
Sydney was recently named an Eastern District Winner Metropolitan Opera
National Council Auditions, after winning an Encouragement Award with
MONC in both 2018 and 2019, and was awarded the Audience Choice Award
at the 2020 Eastern Regionals. She was also a finalist in the 2019 Jensen
Foundation Vocal Competition, First Place winner in the Young Texas Artists’
Competition, and was a Grand Finalist for the prestigious Frank Huntington
Beebe Fellowship.

Sydney holds bachelor’s degrees in Vocal Performance and Music Education
from the University of Hartford, and a master’s degree from the University of
Houston.
