“ So what use does history serve?
Ultimately, just one: it helps us to be
more human. Subtract any and all
analytic or pragmatic applications,
and you are left with the story—the
essential narrative defining our place
Honoring the Past
to Shape the Future
in time and in the stream of our
culture.”

Over 25 years ago, historians Walt
Crowley and Paul Dorpat and designer
Marie McCa昀昀rey had an ambitious and
visionary idea: use the new online platform
called the World Wide Web to create an
encyclopedia of Washington state history.
They launched their new project with the
ambitious headline, “Welcome to the
Future of History.”
In the ever-evolving landscape of history,
where the past and the present intersect to
shape our future, some moments stand as milestones. HistoryLink, Washington’s
online encyclopedia of state history, 昀椀nds itself at such a juncture. The nonpro昀椀t,
co-founded by Walt and Marie, bids farewell to a trailblazer and welcomes a
new steward of its creative and innovative approach to telling our state’s stories.
The Next Chapter
After 25 years of unwavering dedication,
HistoryLink co-founder Marie McCa昀昀rey
is retiring. McCa昀昀rey’s retirement comes
at a time when HistoryLink is a thriving
institution that has 昀氀ourished under her
leadership. This transition marks the
end of an era and the beginning of an
exciting new chapter in the organization’s
development.
HistoryLink welcomes Jennifer Ott as she
steps into the role of Executive Director in
January of 2024. Ott joined HistoryLink
as a historian and writer in 2007; in 2017,
she became Assistant Director. Jennifer’s
transition to this leadership role will carry
forward the organization’s legacy while
charting a course for a dynamic future.
“ I’ve spent the last several
years strengthening the
board, there are exciting new
projects underway, and we
have an exceptional team.
Jen’s historical expertise,
institutional knowledge, and
leadership qualities make her
an outstanding choice to lead
HistoryLink. We’ve worked
closely for several years to
ensure a strong succession and
she’s ready.”
—Marie McCaffrey,
Co-Founder and out-going
Executive Director, HistoryLink
