Making it to the finish - Against All Odds winner: Otakar Chládek and
Zdenka Holečková, 1973 Mercedes-Benz 350 SL
“To come out of lockdown and then to have done the
Cloverleaf’s was a breath of fresh air, then to come here and
do this has been absolutely astonishing”. Naturally winner
Mike Harrison praised Lorna, his wife and navigator, but
also the team of sweeps who kept him and his car on the
road to victory.
Graham Goodwin singled out Marina for praise as well,
crediting her mastery of the maps as the key to their
victory. He gave his car due respect, despite being a big
beast to hustle around the small roads of the west coast
“it’s got a big engine, it’s very capable and, if you’re up for
it then it will perform”.
As well as the class and overall awards, there were two
discretionary prizes up for grabs. The Spirit of the Rally
award went to the novice crew of Paul Taylor and Paul
Haslam who, in their Ford Escort RS2000, displayed great
good humour and fun throughout. They’ve promised to be
back soon, having bettered their own wish to not finish
last. The Against all Odds trophy was awarded to Otakar
Chládek and Zdenka Holečková for their efforts in keeping
their Mercedes on the right road despite knowing very few
words of English and having limited rally experience.
It’s been a great week, full of optimism and confidence
after being parked up for such a long time. We’re off to the
Carrera Italia in just under a month, slowly but surely it
feels like the show is getting back on the road.
